                                                                Reflection On 1000 Words

Through Speech and Communication, an awareness of the importance of oral communication and listening shows an understanding of how language is used to create social changes when developing competency skills. In my Speech and Communication Class, students were placed into three groups where each group had to talk about and explain the chapter they had worked on. Group 1 presented Chapter 3 on Intercultural Communication. This chapter talked about the relationship between culture and communication and how to improve its competence. It describes the process where shared values, norms, beliefs, and attitudes are shared among an identifiable group of people through distinct cultures and how everything in a society is formed through everything that people have, think, and do together. The group had discussed various categories of co-culture that talked about how it influences several aspects of people’s cultures and how its similarities and differences engage throughout the way each individual communicates. When starting a conversation with an adult, you show respect and obedience. For example, as Group 1 spoked about, when talking to an adult who is a married woman, you use the title Ms. and with a married man or not you use Mr. which shows that you have educated when manners when you are talking to an adult. My reflection on this chapter was that I learned about how people from diverse cultures come together as a group to interact and connect with each other talking about the experiences they go through by expressing themselves with shared ideas. Group Communication taught me how I can build a purpose and create powerful relationships with different people where I can learn to develop better communication skills. Group 2 was assigned Chapter 9 on Communicating In Groups. This chapter focuses on how groups function and communicate effectively to reach a specific objective by describing key characteristics and the stages of the way groups are formed and developed. Groups such as Social, Support, Interest, and Service all teach us how to communicate as we are growing up. For example, when a group wants to work in an environment, each member participates in working together as a team to make sure the environment is safe and healthy for people to be involved such as cleaning up, recycling, and doing fundings to assure that our world is essential for living. What I learned from this chapter is that I can provide ways to generate different ideas to achieve a goal by establishing mutual respect when making decisions in solving problems. This teaches me how to build trust and create positive relationships as I work with the people around me in the environment. As for group 3 which was my assigned group, I was committed to work on Chapter 10 about Group Leadership And Problem-Solving. This chapter relates to what effective group leadership means and the responsibilities that every group member has in achieving it and how problem solving takes you through a systematic process where different methods for communicating with others and evaluating group effectiveness are proposed throughout the process. Group Leadership deals with achieving a common goal through applying information that is needed to complete a specific task. This means that every member of the group has a responsibility to do, whether it is being committed to the group goal, keeping discussion on track, completing assignments, asking about others' opinions, or managing the conflict by helping fix the issues of the task. For example, in group leadership, there are maintenance roles which are sets that maintain positive working relationships. For example, there are the supporters who are the ones who give opinions and others must respond through expressions like giving a smile or nodding their head. Interpreters are the ones who use their knowledge about Social, Cultural, and Gender Orientation that will help members of the group understand each other when they talk and express themselves. Maintenance roles are parts that are needed for each member of the group to do to set behaviors of how the group can develop and support a positive working relationship. In Problem-Solving, a system of six tasks is composed to make sure that a problem is solved. In this system, you identify and define a problem, analyze the problem, determine the criteria for judge solutions, generate a host of solutions, brainstorm to figure out what solutions need to be evaluated, and after evaluating those solutions, decide and choose the right one. For example, let us say that a lot of bills have not been paid and the payments are late. You will have to identify what is causing you this problem and figure out how you will fix the situation before any consequences are reached out to you. Make sure to produce a plan with creative ideas and materials that you will use to help you solve the problem that you are dealing with. Having Leadership and knowing how to do Problem-Solving is a way you can have the ability to challenge and inspire others with your challenging work which will help you to continue prominent problems and devise creative solutions for future organizational growth and success. My reflection in this chapter is that I learned how crucial it is to have empathy when dealing with leadership. It has helped me with management and communication where I am able to communicate and work with the people around me. It has taught me the skills I need to lead effectively by persuading and influencing others with direct authority. It has also helped me think in innovative and creative ways when doing different activities or projects. As for Problem-Solving, I learned about different skills that I can use to help me determine an effective solution when deciding the source of a problem. Through problem-solving, I can exert control over my environment by making sure that what I do is effective for the people around me. These three chapters have taught me what it is like to work together as a group because when you work together, you show that you have boosted productivity, more opportunities for growth, smarter risk taking, and increased potential. Teamwork has taught me how to share ideas and responsibilities when completing tasks. Through teamwork, I can meet my goals and achieve success in the present and future.
